I usually use free security software from internet but I am thinking of getting a new computer which comes with 15 months of free McAfee internet security centre, I tried a free trial of McAfee several years ago and I found it a very poor product at that time and it was also VERY resource hungry.
has McAfee changed and is it any good now – I will probably use the 15 month trial regardless but I am just wondering if its antivirus etc has got any better

Yes, McAfee has definatly gotten a lot better in the years. I used to be in the same boat as you, but recently they have redone it as to allow less resource hogging, and yet still output more protection. I have high expectations for virus/malware blocking programs, and yet even with McAfee’s real-time scanning, it uses minimal resources. These are the process RAM usages:
mcsshield.exe (firewall) 53.8 MB
mcsvhost.exe (service host) 9.2 MB
mfevtps.exe (process validator) 2.2 MB
mfefire (core firewall) 1.1 MB
mcagent (security center backgrounding) 1.1 MB
Total RAM usage: 67.4 MB
Processor wise, this program doesn’t use any percentage of it, and at most (full scan), the my 480M Core i5 runs at 20%, and is optimized for all 4 cores of my processor.
Overall, McAfee Security Center is a very good protection program all around, and I would reccomend it to anyone (I’m still using my 15 month trial even though I have the Norton IS 2012 3-user box sitting 10 feet away from me)
Mcafee isnt great, as an IT supplier, we have stopped selling this to our clients.
I would recommend Vipre. one off payment and the license will last the lifetime of the machine.
If you wanted a free AV however i agree with Microsoft Security Essentials. Very good basic level of protection. Hasn’t let me down….more than once…
Use MSE free and PC Tools free firewall.
All you need to know about McAfee is how to remove it!
I would say one of the best
