I just bought an HP laptop from Best Buy (haven’t even opened the box yet) and I didn’t want to pay the extra $100 for the Geek Squad Prepared version. Now I’m wondering what to do…They told me that there is a lot of “crap” on the laptop that should come off or needs to be loaded and it can take up to six hours. They also said that if I don’t know what I am doing I can really screw it up. I’m not sure if all of that was a sales pitch or if I am in over my head.
I also want Word and Excel but they told me that those will be another $100 (on sale), some sort of protection (virus, spyware, etc.), and need to do the general cleaning and set-up as well.
HELP!!!!

Run PC Decrapifierhttp://pcdecrapifier.com/
Get Libre Office instead of $100 M$ Officehttps://www.libreoffice.org/
If you didn’t get an antivirus program, (even if you did I would uninstall it and use):
Microsoft Security Essentialshttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo…
Malwarebyteshttps://malwarebytes.org/
Secunia PSIhttps://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanni…
Geek squad uses scare tactics, do not believe anything they say.
Word and Excel, you have to buy, no way around that fact…you have to buy it, or get a free equivalent like “Openoffice”
Anti-virus is free – pick Microsoft Essentials, Avira or Avast…
And yes, there is a lot of “crap” on the laptop, but you can remove most of it yourself….
I have no idea what is inside your computer right now so I can’t tell you if you need to install or uninstall things….
but $100 for Office was a great deal….you should have taken it.
and yes,you do need a good antivirus (stay away from McAfee and AVG)
First thing first. Does the laptop comes with pre-installed OS? Windows 7 maybe? If it does, then you should have no problem on doing maintenance all by yourself. For Word and Excel, you can use open source program such as the Open Office, Libre Office, etc. What is this “crap” they mean? If it’s a brand new laptop, it shouldn’t have those “craps” in it. If they were saying about unnecessary programs, you should decide on that yourself (whether you want to use it or not). For protection, there’s a lot of free AV/AM out there you can use. For Windows, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials add with Malwarebytes or any anti-spyware. All necessary programs you can install yourself. Here is the basic programs that should at least be in your laptop.
Microsoft Security Essentials : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo…
Anti-Spyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/download…
CCleaner : http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Revo Uninstaller : http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_unin…
That should cover protection and cleaning.
Here is open office : http://www.openoffice.org/
unless you already have Microsoft Office.
Microsoft office does cost extra money on top of a laptop purchase, but you can usually skip the bestbuy prep and actually bring it to some local shop to do this intead.
If you are not an advanced user of Word and Excel, I would recommend that you give LibraOffice a try. It is free and covers most standard Word and Excel functions. Get it at http://www.libraoffice.org
What I usually do for new computers, is to go straight to control panel and remove stuff that I don’t need. Usually it is fine this way.
If that is not “clean enough” for you, you can always reinstall windows and wipe out whatever the OEM put in for you. For that you need to obtain a install medium, and throw in the license key on the bottom of the laptop. That would license you for a totally clean windows installation.
Your local shops should be able to furnish all of these service for a reasonable price or be able to offer more for what the geek squad charges.
