There’s about 1 in every 5 PDF files that I try to important into Calibre to convert to MOBI files, but I seem to be having a problem with a few of them. It says something like cannot read metadata and the file is imported as unknown. Is there a way to fix this? I’d really like to read these in my kindle because these are titles that aren’t available on it.

Actually, Kindle can read the unDRM PDF files directly.
Of course, mobi is a better choice for Kindle, you said that about 1 in 5 has the problem, you can try to correct the metadata in Acrobat.
If that won’t do, maybe it’s the issue of DRM, try to bypass the PDF DRM.
