the program that runs my mobile broadband connection shows between 80-200 kbps is currently being downloaded but the only file i am downloading is shown by windows as having a transfer rate of 10 kbps and judging by how long it is taking the windows meter is correct. there is nothing else running or downloading in the background. what is causing the extra traffic? it is also showing between 7-15kbps currently being uploaded. i have current Norton Internet security, it updated 5 mins b4 i started downloading…
Thankyou

you could be dealing with a problem with mixed units… your program running the mobile broadband could be showing your rate as kiloB ITS/sec, while windows is showing it as kiloBYTES/sec… remember, there are 8 bits in a byte, so if the former shows 80, the latter would show 10.
Also, Norton Internet Security is a very ‘heavy’ program… it uses a lot of resources to operate, thereby, slowing down your overall thruput… get a lighter program, like AVAST
do you have the windows automatic updates turned on? also adobe, java, and a few other pieces of software by default have automatic updates that run. look in to those.
if you are using a peer-to-peer programme to download a file, it is probably uploading other files to other users on the network
