On sunday my laptop presented me with the hard drive failure is imminent message and so after a bit of searching I’ve backed up to an external hard drive a disc image of my HD, plus an extra backup of individual important folders and also the back up that the software its self performed.
I believe this will allow me to remove the HD and replace it with a new one and then use this image to restore everything as it was. (please correct me if im wrong)
However, i was planning on upgrading to a desktop when i finished uni (year and a half from now) and so rather than buy a new HD that will only be used for a short while i figure its better to just buy a new desktop now.
My question is would i be able to use this disc image from my laptop on a new desktop? so that everything would be as it was?
I have many programmes that were one time licences or could only be installed on one day and so i have a lot of programmes that i would lose if i cant do what I’m asking.
Is there a way of keeping all of these programmes on a completely new system – as i said i cant just reinstall them?
Thanks.

to use your backup(s) to restore everything EXACTLY as it was, you will need to have a drive that is EXACTLY the same size (and preferably the same brand name).
if it were ME, i would reinstall Windows, and reap the benefits of a fresh install (much faster).
and no, unfortunately you CANNOT restore your backup to a different PC, as the drivers on it are ment for the laptop. it would likely freeze or not even load Windows at all, even in Safe Mode. i’ve been thru this several times before, and that is unfortunately not an option.
as i said, a fresh install is always best anywayz.
