Has My Netgear Router Got A Built In Firewall?

By admin Posted in: Firewall Software

When i go into my netgear router’s settings i can block things to all laptops in the house. for example i can put in the word facebook or the facebook domain and then when someone tries to access facebook it says its blocked. is this what a firewall is?

Not exactly. A firewall blocks ALL incoming packets (not outgoing) unless they are identified as belonging to a previous outgoing request. This is to stop people or programs accessing machines inside the local network from the Internet. This is generally handled naturally by NAT (Network Address Translation) which actually marks outgoing packets to identify the originating machine. This is the most effective firewall there is. In addition some routers have a facility to block outward packets, this is in efffect access control, and on some can allow per machine filtering. This is part of the firewall settings, but is not handled by NAT, as the packets NEVER leave the system. To achieve this the router has to carry an IP tables type firewall as well. An older system but needed for external packet management.

Consumer grade routers do not have a build in firewall, unlike what everyone else in this topic claims. Vendors might claim that their routers contain a build in firewall, but this is nothing more than NAT and not a true firewall. Firewalls also do not block viruses, as one person claimed. Firewalls block ports, services, et cetera. For example FTP network traffic goes over port 21 by default. A firewall might block all network traffic on port 21, it might block only certain IP addresses or IP ranges for example, it might perform DPI on the packets and only block those packets which do not qualify as FTP traffic, et cetera. That is what a firewall does, it allows network packets to go through or it blocks them, all based on specific rules set up in the firewall. Consumer grade routers do not have such advanced functionality. Many vendors refer to NAT as a firewall, but technically this is not correct. For a normal user though NAT is more than sufficient. NAT simply forwards ports based on rules. As for blocking on basis of a domain name or a keyword, this is a parental control setting which has nothing to do with firewalls or NAT. Content filtering is a part of many routers.

every router should have built in firewall. i havent seen a router without firewall.
that is not actually what firewall is. firewall blocks information like virus or other people etc

All routers have firewall. What you are talking about is not a firewall. It’s parental control, and has nothing to do with the router.

Every Router has Firewalls. There Are no routers without firewall.what you saying is different its not a firewall. i think its parental control.

all rounters have a firewall to monior and be able to block packets of data.

in short yes a domain name ban/proxy filter will do that.
