Help Fixing My Computer Please?

By admin Posted in: Uncategorized

Hi. I am not a true computer expert, but I am just starting to go to school for system’s administration, and I am usually pretty good about knowing what I am doing. Anyways, my sister’s computer has me stumped. It is an acer laptop, and it is messed up to the point where i don’t even know what to do. She let my mom loose on it, which was probably the worst thing she could have done. My mom told her something about defragmenting it, due to the fact that my sister was unhappy with it’s speed, and now her computer runs slow as hell, and it won’t even connect to the internet anymore. I am talking out of the air right now, because I haven’t learned much about it, but I think my mom partitioned her hard drive, rather than defragment it. I looked at that pie graph that tells you how much memory you have and her C: drive has 111MB out of like 50GB, and her D: drive has about 50/51GB left. First, I thought every computer was supposed to come with way more memory than that in the C: drive, and way less in the D: drive. I know the C: handles all basic things, but I have no idea what the D: drive is used for. I also installed Avast on her computer (which is the best antivirus IMO) and did a full system scan. It found 12 viruses, and I got rid of them all except one which said the file could not be found.
Long story short: can someone please try to help me get internet back on her computer, and fix her hard drive? We have a solid internet connection, and it works rarely, so that is not the problem. Thank you

A Windows computer has _at least_ a C: drive that’s used for booting, and then also other drives you could use, for example, to store your documents keeping them separate from your software.
As per your situation, you will be best wiping out your hard drive and reinstalling Windows.

Sometime the registry are messed up so download “Tune up utilities” and fix if any error it finds. It also deletes all the junk file on the drives.

the “second” hard drive is just a partition that was created by Acer that will have all the files to restore the computer to what it was when it was bought. suggest you look at setting the computer back. look at tyhe manual or web site and it will tell you what key to press during boot that will allow you to do this

The Problem you are describing is just a software problem you have installed some softwares and if i m not wrong you have more than one antivirus please Uninstall that heavy softwares (antivirus any one)
most probably this problem will be solved by this thing but if u are still facing a problem than format and repartition your hard drive and install operating system again that will surely work.
    thanks please vote.

There are lots of things you can do in hopes that it will recfify and/or “put things back” the way they were.
I personally tend to simplify things. I’ll look at the problem, and then say to myself, how long is it going to take to maybe fix this, and then maybe fix that, and then see if I can figure out this, etc., etc., etc. If I come up with some number that looks like it’s a day or more work, I usually rebuild the hard drive with the software disks that came with the pc ( hopefully you still have them). If you don’t, shame on you Systems Admin guy!!!
For me that is usually the easiest fix, and it will make sure everything gets put back to where it was when it left the factory. The only thing I recommend that you do, is go to the Manufacturers web site, and look in the Support section for driviers, etc. and see if the drivers have changes (date or version) and get the latest that you can.
The worst part about rebuilding an infected computer is wiping the hard drive clean (I use Killdisk and it’s FREE).
Then when you install Windows and it discusses formatting the hard drive, because you’ve already wiped the hard drive clean, just do a “quick format”, and then finish with the Windows install.
What I also usually do is not connect any internet wires or establish a wireless connection until I finish the rebuild (Windows; drivers; all software) installations. Once I’m done with all that, then I’ll establish the internet connection plug in the Cat5/6 wire or creat a wireless connection and continue with the full update process for Windows.
It does take some time but with todays high speed connections it all goes pretty quick. And the other thing to do, is things like XP Service Pace 3, save it to your hard drive and then install it. This way if you ever need it again, you already have it on a disk or flash drive. I burn them to disk. Windows Media Player 11, and Microsoft Security Essentials are also good to do this with. And by the way, I’d recommend you give Microsoft Security Essential a shot instead of Avast, AVG, or Avira. MSE seems to use a smaller footprint, less resources, and run much quicker that the 3 I mentioned. Give it a shot, you can always uninstall MSE and install Avast again if you so desire.
SECURITY: Here’s what I use and it hasn’t failed me.
    Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials
    Adware: AdAware FREE
Antispyware & System Optimizer: Advanced System Care FREE
    Malware: Malwarebytes FREE
Turn off programs running in the background: Autoruns FREE
Disk Maintainence: Wise Disk Cleaner FREE
Registry Cleaner: Wise Registry Cleaner FREE
    Uninstaller: REVO Uninstaller FREE
    Disk Eraser: Killdisk FREE
All of those programs are available at http://www.download.com
Search on them and then click on the program names in “blue” to read the Editors review, and the Manufacturers overview of the software.
In summary, I usually find that it’s less work for me to rebuild a pc than it is to try to figure out each problem and then address them one by one. Your choice.
    Hope this all helps.
