All I can say is if you turn off updates it will make your machine extremely vulnerable to future hacking an malware attacks, as most updates are security patches for holes in the system. Generally if this kind of thing happens, it is because you are running some other program which conflicts with the update. Better to fix the problem, rather than leave the machine vulnerable

   Control Panel>Security Center>Automatic Updates>Turn off. I also turned my updates off, because I have a slow connection.
