Mkay, so I’m a 16 year old girl with little hardcore tech experience.
Short story:
My computer started shutting down randomly.
This popped http://i53.tinypic.com/303g3f7.png
I know how to start windows in safe-mode but It doesn’t tell you how to troubleshoot it once I get there.
Help?
Details:
I use a gateway desktop, I got it from best-buy. They told me Trend antivirus would be a good one to use so I bought that with the computer, and my computer has been working great up until a few days ago.
It started shutting down randomly.
The screen on the desktop goes black, the blue light on it goes orange.
Sorta like it’s sleeping, but the light on the tower stays on and doesn’t blink. And when I press the button on the tower – nothing happens, so I end up having to manually unplug EVERYTHING and wait a few minutes just to restart it because it won’t shut down any other way, and when I try and just turn off and on the monitor it’ll start to turn on again, then just go black all over.
I apologize for not being able to explain this very well, I’m just confused and I think everyone is having money problems so I’d rather not have to take it in to be overcharged for something I may be able to fix myself.
Thank you so much for reading, and any help you could give c:
Have a lovely day/night.

Okay, there are a number of reasons why your system is shutting down on its own–some you can fix some you can’t.
1) It’s overheating. This can be caused by blocking the fan exhaust port (where the hot air comes out on the side or in the back. If this is a laptop it could be you’re using the system on a blanket and not on a hard surface like a desk. If it’s a desktop then it might be shoved back into a space under the desk where it can’t get cold air in or its sucking the hot air in and re-heating it. Just make sure the system has nothing blocking the air inputs on the side or back. Next, turn off the system and find the two screws in the back to remove the side cover. Get a can of compressed air (about $3) and blow out the dust that’s accummulated around the fans and CPU. This is the most common cause of overheating.
2) It has a software problem. This is tougher for a novice to fix but don’t listen to anyone that would have you format your computer–that will only cause more problems than you already have. Find a geeky friend to look at it–but someone you trust. Make sure your virus scans are up to date.

clean the duxt out of inside it, the fans, motherboard, CPU cooler, power supply, everything. If it continues, your Power Supply is going bad.
BTW, Best Buy Geek Squad is not a great place to take a PC. They are not very well trained and have a very marginal understanding of PCs. The Computer Sales people know even less.
You need the computer disk it will clean your whole computer up. From viruses and all.
Start Windows in Safe mode, then go to Start>All programs>accesories> System tools>System restore. Then select “restore my computer to an earlier point” and hit next. Pick 2 days before the problem started happening, and maybe that should fix it. If you installed any programs, or changed any settings after that day, they will be cancelled out. You will need to do it again. So hopefully that will fix it. If not, try doing a little online research on the problem.
Honey, just so you know, asking for advice at Best buy is like asking a blind man to show you the way. As to your problem, see if you can boot it up in safe mode and run a virsus scan. Also, see if you can restore your PC to a previous save point, through control panel. Wish I could give you something more specific but it could be literaly 100s of things causing this. Better yet, take your computer to best buy and have them fix it =)
